The leaderless organization of the Egyptian opposition movement

by Nicolay Worren on February 4th, 2011

I am – as I guess that most of you are – following the events in Egypt with great interest. I feel great sympathy with the protesters and hope that their legitimate demands will be met. As pointed out in this New York Times article, the protesters represent a mix of different groups and have no leader at the moment. A key question is thus how they will organize themselves going forward. Will they be able to continue with an “anarchistic” structure, or will they need need to become more formalized and centralized in order to initiate a dialogue with the current government and prepare the constitutional changes? Will they introduce democratic principles in selecting leaders to represent them?  In circumstances such as these, the choices one makes in designing the organization could have historic implications.
