In my previous video, I discussed the horizontal structure of organizations, and more specifically, how we can ensure that the boundaries between units are aligned with the work processes and the information flow.
In the video this week, I focus on how we can best define the responsibility of managers at different levels of the organization. More specifically, I discuss who should be responsible for assessing employees’ future potential and thereby influence decisions regarding promotions and transfers.
This is a key element – or should be – in “talent management” and succession planning processes.
The most complete and coherent approach for defining the responsibility of managers at different levels is called Requisite Organization. In the video, I describe one key idea in this approach that I think is simple yet intriguing. It’s called three tier management.
For more information about this concept, see chapter 6 of my book or head over to the Global Organization Design society.
This is the fourth of five videos about important organization design ideas. I will return with the final one next week!
